I think his view is not objective, there is a lot of personal frustration in it.
1.  China and USA are very different in terms of economic enviroment, interpersonal involvement, and traditional behavior and thoughts.  In States, very few people "take back door" (zou3hou4men2).  You are very much relay on your own capability.  There are so many excellent Chinese students landed nice job in famous company, so successful and nounced in their profession.  I do believe, if here has same Chinese enviroment, we who has NO family background at all, will have way less people successful and way more obstucles to succee.  Even thought Anericans still say "it is who you know rather than what you know", but the "who you know"play a much smaller role than in China.

2.  Each individual's personality decides how and where you do better.  I think those Nerdy people may survive better in States than in China, because they do not know how to waving a interpersonal net, do not know how to pkease their boss.  Here in States, you might not need those if you work in certain area, or say need less of those skills.   In the mean time, people who are very outgoing, always like to be involed into the social and bussiness circles, may do better in China.  They may find themselves smoothered in States-----because they think it is too boring.
3.  Language is a true element dicided if they can survive in States.  If you can not speak English well, you can not melt into and enjoy American daily life, then go back to China.  We do not want to live somewhere that we suffered all the time, no music you like, no talk show you can laugh with, no people you can have a cup of tea with, that's not the place we want to live.

However, do not generalize every Chinese who live here.  Not most of people here are living a pathetic life.  To a lot of people, with or without high eduction, they find their spot in this society after several years of hard working.  It is the same in China.  Whithout parents support, how may college graduates can afford a house 5 years after they gradute?  How many of us in States can afford a house fives after we land a stable job?  HOw many of those Chinese Hai3Gui1 have to worry about their research funding after they work in an university there?  How many of us in States worry sick after being tenured?  HOw many weeks of vacation you can get in China as a Hai3Gui1, how many you can enjoy in States?  Of course China has a lot of advantages too,  such as food, language enviroment, families, etc.
Wish you live well no matter where you are.
