1. Define what you want

It can take a senior level executive six to 12 months to find a new job. Don’t waste time by setting off in the wrong direction. Engage in a “career audit” of past positions to define what you liked and disliked about each job. Know what is nonnegotiable for you as you start the search. Identify companies that you’d like to work for – and your motivation for selecting them.

2. Determine if you’re ready for a change

Don’t start a job search unless you’re really ready to change companies. Using an offer from another company (particularly a competitor) to get what you want from your current firm is not the way to go. A “power play” against your current employer may backfire, leading to strained relations and downward mobility or put you on the fast track to departure. Move forward if and when you’re ready to make this step.

3. Know who you are

Understanding your work-related personality – expert, competitor, learner, or entrepreneur – will help you identify the best opportunities to pursue. For example, experts tend to stick with one field, and often one company, to deepen their knowledge and become a sought-after specialist. Competitors are driven to gain influence and responsibility, and frequently switch companies, functions, and even careers. Learners and entrepreneurs are curious and attracted to new things. Learners usually select a field and move every five to seven years. Entrepreneurs may want to work for a corporation, but usually do best at a start-up company.

4. Find your core strengths

Your core strengths are what distinguish you from other candidates. As you seek to identify those strengths, consider how colleagues and peers describe you (e.g., creative, reliable, no-nonsense, etc.). Coaching may also help you explore your vision and values, and create your personal brand.

5. Market yourself

Communicate your strengths and the tangible, significant results that you have achieved. Use action verbs and phrases to highlight your function and showcase your expertise. Every encounter with new people is an opportunity to practice your pitch. What can you say about yourself to attract the attention you want?

6. Highlight what you want and why you deserve it

When you send out your résumé, include a cover letter that reinforces the content of your résumé and compels the reader to follow up with you. Clearly state what you are looking for and why this organization or position matches your vision.

7. Use recruiters to assist you in your job search

First, know what a recruiter can and cannot do for you. Recruiters aren’t career coaches, and the premier firms like Korn/Ferry International focus only on C-suite, managing director, and board-level candidates. But there are firms that cater to midlevel professionals. Seek an introduction to these recruiters from someone you know, preferably someone who is a well-known industry contact or who has been a client of that recruiting firm.

8. Interview with confidence

Remember, initial impressions are formed within the first eight seconds of meeting someone. So manage how you are perceived by: establishing rapport and trust with the interviewer; selling yourself while the interviewer sells the role and the corporate culture to you; and wrapping up the interview by soliciting feedback and defining next steps.

9. Know what you’re worth

Top talent is always in demand, even in a tough environment. If you receive more than one offer, be careful not to appear as if you are playing one company against another. After you have reviewed and accepted the offer, use the personal touch. Communicate your acceptance by calling the recruiter, HR personnel, and/or the hiring manager. Thank them for the opportunity.

10. Take control of the process

Your job search is more than finding a new position. It is a chance to define who you are and the value you bring, and to explore new companies and industries. Take control of the process by being thoughtful through each phase, making sure that the position you ultimately accept is the best one for you. This time of exploration and transition can help you hone your personal brand, identify your work-related desires, and attain the best position for you. When the right match is made, everyone benefits.
